The city of Budapest is one of our favorite destinations for enjoying Christmas markets. A true tradition in Hungary and, more broadly, throughout Eastern Europe, the Christmas markets light up Budapest and transform the capital into a real-life fairy tale. As the holiday season approaches, Budapest undergoes a transformation, with streets fully decorated, squares filled with little chalets, and the aroma of food wafting through the air.

In this comprehensive guide, we introduce you to Budapest’s various Christmas markets and what there is to do during the holiday season in the Hungarian capital.

Budapest’s Christmas Markets

There are several Christmas markets in Budapest. The two best-known ones are just a 5-minute walk from each other: the Christmas market at Vörösmarty Square and the one at St. Stephen’s Basilica.

Budapest’s Largest Christmas Market: The One at Vörösmarty Square

Budapest’s largest Christmas market is held on Vörösmarty Square, right in the heart of downtown, near the Váci pedestrian street.

There are wooden booths featuring local artisans and numerous food booths where you can sample and enjoy Hungarian specialties.

There are usually entertainment events and concerts held every day on the main stage.

The Christmas Market at the Basilica of Saint-Étienne

The Saint-Etienne Basilica Market is my favorite. The basilica is magnificent and adds incredible charm to this Christmas market. A large Christmas tree is set up right in front of the basilica, and the interplay of lights with the facade illuminated at night is magnificent.

As at any Christmas market, you’ll find the typical stalls featuring local artisans and Christmas decorations, as well as food stands. Every afternoon, starting at 5:30 p.m., the basilica’s facade is illuminated with a light show, often preceded by a concert. There’s also a small ice rink around the large Christmas tree.

It certainly isn’t as big as the one on Vörösmarty Square, but I think it has more charm. In fact, the Basilica Christmas Market won the title of Europe’s best Christmas market in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

The Christmas markets at Erszébet Square and Városháza Park.

The Christmas market at Erzsébet Square focuses on Christmas culinary specialties. It is located at the foot of the Ferris wheel. The City Hall Park, meanwhile, is a charming little park with plenty of activities for children as well as an ice rink.

Other Things to Do During the Christmas Markets in Budapest

Enjoy the lights along Deák Street, known as “Fashion Street”

While you’re in Budapest enjoying the holiday season, be sure to check out Deák Ferenc Street, also known as “Fashion Street.” This shopping street stretches for nearly 500 meters and is beautifully lit and decorated. The storefronts are each more beautiful than the last.

Hot Springs in Winter

There are three main bathhouses in Budapest: Rudas, Gellért, and Széchenyi. The Széchenyi Baths are the largest in Budapest, and in all of Europe. The complex features 15 pools: 3 outdoor pools and 12 indoor pools ranging in temperature from 27 to 38 degrees. There are also various saunas and steam rooms within the complex.

It’s definitely a must-see if you’re visiting Budapest during the Christmas season. As for us, we enjoyed the baths at dusk; in the middle of winter, the contrast between hot and cold is actually quite pleasant.

The Largest Ice Rink in Budapest

Budapest’s largest ice rink is located in Városligeti City Park, right next to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. Open since 1870, this rink is not only the largest in the capital but also one of the oldest in the world.

It offers skating enthusiasts a unique winter experience, surrounded by the beautiful park and magnificent monuments.

If you want to go ice skating, this is undoubtedly the place to go in Budapest.

The Danube and its illuminated bridges

The Danube flows right through the capital, and is truly the heart of Budapest. During the holiday season, after dark, the banks of the Danube are breathtakingly beautiful. The city’s bridges light up and are reflected in the water. The Chain Bridge, the Elizabeth Bridge, and the Margaret Bridge are bathed in white and gold lights, creating a magnificent spectacle.

As for us, we haven’t had the chance to take a cruise on the Danube, but we’ve heard nothing but good things about it. If you’re interested in this activity, you can find Danube cruises directly on the Get Your Guide platform.

What to Eat at Budapest’s Christmas Markets?

Most of the booths at the Christmas market will be food stalls. So you’ll have no trouble finding and sampling Hungarian specialties. Here are a few of them:

  • Kürtőskalács : If Christmas had a taste, this would be it. It’s literally the perfect sweet Christmas treat (in Prague, they call it trdelník). It’s a sweet dough wrapped around a wooden skewer, then grilled over hot coals and sprinkled with sugar or cinnamon; you can add toppings like chocolate or ice cream.
  • Lángos : a fried pastry filled with cream, grated cheese, ham, etc…
  • Hungarian sausages : grilled and served with mustard or bread. Some are seasoned with paprika.
  • Goulash : the classic Hungarian paprika stew.
  • Chicken or Pork with Paprika : a dish often served with potatoes.
  • Stuffed Cabbage : cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice.
  • and, of course, roasted potatoes.

Where to stay in Budapest during the holiday season?

To get the most out of Budapest’s Christmas markets, we recommend staying in the city center, in Budapest’s 5th, 6th, or 7th districts. That way, you can do everything on foot without having to take public transportation.

Unfortunately, I can’t recommend a specific hotel to stay at in Budapest, because the hotel where we stayed during our trip no longer exists.

Visiting Budapest to see the Christmas markets: Is it worth it?

If you’re wondering whether Budapest’s Christmas markets are worth the trip, the answer is a resounding yes! For one thing, we love the holiday season in Eastern European countries, they have that special something you just don’t find back home, and on top of that, Budapest is a gorgeous city that’s well worth the trip.

We love the capital, we love the Christmas markets, and the big plus compared to other Christmas markets and some other cities is that the markets are all close to each other, which means you can see several in a single day without spending a ton of time getting from one to the next.

The setting is magnificent once night falls, and the decorations give Budapest a whole new atmosphere. The entire city becomes a true winter wonderland, and in our opinion, it’s the perfect destination for combining a Christmas market with a city trip.
